During my senior year, I decided to participate in a performance put on by the Women's Action Commission called The ____ Monologues, their own twist on the well known show The Vagina Monologues. By auditioning and agreeing to perform, I committed to sharing my story with a wide audience for the first time ever. This whole experience was a very momentous event since I had never challenged myself to reflect and share about some of the things I held deepest to me. By sharing, I was able to find a sense of acceptance and love for myself.
I believe that in order to help others the most affectively, you need to be as mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy as you can be. I had often put others before myself and my own well being but by confronting things within myself I had previously decided to hide, I was putting myself first for once. If my ultimate goal is be a tool of empowerment to my community, then I need find a sense of empowerment within myself first. I also believe that by sharing my story, I helped others who may not have felt as if they had the courage to do the same. This is important in anything that I do, that I do not just preach the preach so to say, but walk the walk.
Tasks Accomplished:
Leadership Capacities:
After this experience, there is no other way to say it than I have been able to be vulnerable and honest in all parts of my life. Letting go of baggage that has held me down allowed me to be unapologetically me. I know that whatever I do with my life will only be enhanced ten fold by my willingness and ability to be honest and true to myself.
