Beginning the September after graduation, I began a year long term of service through AmeriCorps with the Pipeline Project at the University of Washington. Going from a college student to a young professional in the matter of weeks was very difficult, but in the last 10.5 months I have really proved to myself what a hard worker I am and developed my own beliefs on a strong work ethic. Before, I had limited professional experience and based much more of my identity off of theoretical articles, books, conversations and classes. Having practical experience this past year has helped me flush out what it means to me to be an employee, a team member, a supervisor and a hard worker. Amongst these roles, I have developed a sense of pride in myself as a young professional and owning that identity, without it limiting me either. I realize how much I have left to learn from those older, younger and my peers, which just makes me excited and looking forward to my professional future.
Tasks Accomplished:
- Seminar facilitation
- Campus Partner Collaboration
- Program Support
- Student Orientations and Support
- Recruitment - presentations and event programming
- Direct K-12 class room service hours
- Alternative Spring Break planning and participation
- In Design: flyers, graphics and ASB magazine
The Pipeline Project staff and program gave me an amazing opportunity as a recent college graduate to experience what it is like to work at a top university and work with both undergraduate students, as well as K-12 students. I feel very lucky to have had the experience I did; I met so many amazing UW students, staff and community members who showed me what it means to put student's identities and experiences at the forefront of your work.
